Restoring fair access to home ownership - a modern village concept by Shelter SA

Australia is experiencing a housing crisis. Greater numbers of people are locked out of home ownership and the private rental market. For those households who do achieve mortgages, more are retiring without completing them, often being immediately plunged into housing stress. Social housing supply does not meet demand. Homelessness services and charities are overwhelmed by greater numbers of people who need assistance and suitable housing outcomes are severely limited.

In response to these issues, Shelter SA has developed a modern village concept, that aims to promote disruption to the traditional housing market which sees us building expensive houses on expensive land. You can read more about the Modern Village Concept here.

Watch our slideshow called Housing Disruption to learn more including the below:

The principles of the modern village concept;

Some of the different configurations of modular or pre-fabricated housing that are available and could assist with reducing house prices;

Legal structures to organise how we use land and increase affordability; and

A high level outline of a financial model that is not dependent on government funding.

The Town of Gawler partnered with Shelter SA to hold a workshop to develop the concept of modern villages and developed a short video explaining the outcomes.

Many years ago, marking the beginnings of our housing disruption work, then called Capital Asset, Shelter SA participated in the Share Challenge, describing a build to rent model.
