Private renters should be allowed to bring pets into their homes. Pets are a very important part of people’s lives, and there are undeniable links between pets and good mental health. More than two-thirds of Australian households own pets and with home ownership on the decline, more families must reside in private rental properties. During May 2019, of 544 properties listed for rent on a real estate website in Norwood and surrounding suburbs, only 49 properties were pet-friendly (9%). The South Australian Government is considering making pet bonds legal. Shelter SA strongly opposes the introduction of pet bonds - there is no evidence that they will increase the number of pet-friendly rentals on offer. People are already struggling to pay their rent and enter the private rental market because of unaffordability and a pet bond is just another barrier.
